Previously I talked about the places I wanted to see thanks to a show called Taste of Australia. We had very limited time and we had to make the most of it by day tripping from our home base. Today’s trip plan was to Milawa and Beeechworth to see some wineries and stop at the Milawa Cheese Factory. Milawa is just south of Wangaratta and not far from Myrtleford……I know I love the names! After getting a little lost we find our way to Milawa Cheese factory which is a bit off the beaten path…..well in all honesty it probably wasn’t…..I really missed our gps on this trip!
After a bit of lunch we head off to Brown Brothers Winery just down the road. I was last to this winery about 17 years ago and loved it then. It was the first Australian winery I had ever been to so it holds a special place in my heart. This winery was established in 1889 and is one of Australia’s leading family-owned wineries. It is beautifully landscaped and rustically elegant…..such a great place to relax and smell the roses or the shiraz!
Back in the car and it’s time to head to Beechworth. This historic town, known mainly for the gold rush days has been beautifully preserved, you feel like you’re stepping back in time. We wander along the main street and enjoy all the boutiques, bakeries and admire the interesting signage.
At the end of our day we spy a little alleyway coved with murals and artwork. We venture a little closer to discover the entrance to Bridge Road Brewers located in a 150 year old coach house. We have a good chuckle when we are told that there is no beer because they are in the midst of cleaning their lines. We settle for ice cream and low an behold they have liquorice from Gundowring Fine Foods that I have dying to try! It’s the end of another fantastic day in Oz as we head back on the road thinking about how we can cycle around the area next time.
