On the sixth day of Christmas my true love gave to me….beer. Hmm I think this gift is more for him than for me. In Niagara we are lucky to have some great beer. First stop is Niagara College Teaching Brewery http://www.firstdraft.ca/content/ the Brewmaster label is a great retro style label with a cherry pilsner, strong ale, IPA and a stout.
As mentioned on its’ website it is Canada’s “first and only teaching brewery”. These students have been working hard and Niagara College Teaching Brewery has been the recipient of a number of awards. These include gold for Butler’s Bitter, in the Canadian Brewing Awards, 2013 and Silver in the US Open Beer Championships in 2011 and 2013. They are located on Taylor Road at the Niagara on the Lake campus. Drop by to stock up for the holidays.
Our next stop is just down Niagara Stone Road in Virgil, Silversmith Brewing Company http://www.silversmithbrewing.com is located in an old church, across from the delicious Pie Plate. Their mantra is really really good beer brewed the hard way. How about their growler program for your true love? A 1.5 litre bottle or 4 pints will make you pretty popular with your friends. Silversmith often pairs up with local food trucks and offers great fare and beer! Fridays nights after 4 p.m. El Gastonomo Vagabundo http://www.elgastro.com, Ontario’s first gourmet food truck and Food Network Celebrity Adam Hynam-Smith and his lovely partner in crime Tamara Jensen are in the house serving up fresh, eclectic items like red curry, smoked salmon croquette and pork belly tacos. Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. you will find Tide and Wine Oyster Company http://www.tideandvine.com. Serving east and west coast Canadian oysters, tasty chowders and opening a new location this winter on Portage Road in Niagara Falls.
Niagara Oast House Brewers http://oasthousebrewers.ca a little further down Niagara Stone Road towards Niagara on the Lake located in the red barn. Love the truck out front decked out for the NOTL Santa Claus parade. Oast has specialty beers in small batches so you have to keep going back to taste their new seasonal beer. What a hardship! I’m a big fan of their fall beer, pumpkin ale. Currently they have packaged up for the holidays their farmhouse ale collection in a nice gift pack.
A common theme here is these local people all share our love for food and Niagara. What a fantastic combination!
